On Indigenous People’s Day we celebrate the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples. With that in mind, we’d like to recommend five amazing books by Indigenous authors.

Between 1850 and 1860, the white settler population grew from 6,077 to 172,023, all of them encroaching on the homelands of Indigenous populations. But were the settlers to blame for the resulting genocide caused by settler-colonialism, or were they simply innocent people in pursuit of their dreams?

Growing up in Minnesota, I was surprised that it wasn’t until I was in graduate school in Mankato that I first learned of the U.S. - Dakota War of 1862. Although I’ve learned much about it since then, I’ve discovered that there are still many Americans who know little or nothing about the events of this tragic conflict.
